CORAL CASTLE -When in Miami you may want
to visit a unique Castle - A Coral Castle. As the
names suggests the Castle is made by coral. But that
is not the unique part of the castle – the uniqueness
comes from the fact that it was built by one man named
- Ed. He was heartbroken and deeply saddened by the
loss of his love. He set out on a lifelong quest to
create a monument of great beauty to his lost love.
For many years Ed worked non-stop and this work resulted
in one of the world’s most remarkable achievements.
Ed without any outside assistance or large machinery
single-handedly built the Coral Castle.
Over a period of 20 years, he collected, carved and
sculpted over 1,100 tons of coral rock as a testimony
to his lost love, Agnes.
Now we wonder what exactly was the source of inspiration
that drove this man for years and years to carve a
Coral Castle from the ground up using
nothing but odd tools made from junk parts. Unrequited
love? Ancient sciences that defy gravity, or just
sheer, raw human determination? The Coral
Castle is an everlasting mystery to those
who explore it.
The builder of this magnificent site was Edward Leedskalnin.
He came to America from Latvia. Having spent twenty
years of his life from the 1920's to 1940's creating
Coral Castle he eventually died in 1951.
The Coral Castle is situated some
20 miles south of Miami City and a trip here is well
worth the effort (it is also quite close to Monkey
Jungle).
