Miami
Parrot Jungle & Gardens - Austrian born
Franz Scherr came to America in 1911, and 25 years
later, he started a most unusual tourist attraction,
Miami's Parrot Jungle. Parrot Jungle is now the home
for 1,100 tropical birds, 2,000 varieties of plants
and flowers, and the best trained bird show in the
world. It is a place where exotic birds "fly
free" everyday.
This fixture of Miami tourism is kitschy but clean,
its bird shows well-mounted and entertaining. And
the parrots are everywhere -- over 100 of Parrot
Jungle's 1200 macaws and cockatoos are allowed
to fly, squawk and beg for food when and where they
please. This is no zoo of birdcages, folks. You're
right there in the middle of the action. Of course,
Parrot Jungle is more than just parrots. It's got
some alligators and monkeys, other exotic birds, and
its postcard-famous flock of Greater Flamingos. And
it is also home to the world's biggest crocodile!
You can also help to feed some of the birds and talk
with the animal trainers as they go around the park.
The restaurant overlooks Flamingo Lake
making this the perfect place for a lunchtime break
and snack.
There are lots of shows and special exhibits so check
out the timings before you arrive to make the most
of your trip.
Parrot Jungle Island is at 1111
Parrot Jungle Trail, off 395, between downtown Miami
and South Beach. Take the 395 via the MacArthur Causeway
and make a right turn on Parrot Jungle Trail and follow
the signs.
